“Dear Ed:

“My wife and I have been timeshare owners for more than 12 years. We now own three weeks in different resorts. We have also been members of RCI since we purchased our first timeshare. Last year I heard about the NTOA through a newspaper article and decided to join the organization. We have been less than pleased with RCI over the last several years and we were interested in alternatives to trading and the possibility of eventually selling one or more of our properties. I read about the NTOA meeting being held in Kissimmee, Florida on January 31st of this year and my wife and I decided to attend the meeting since it was only an hour drive away.

“The meeting was scheduled from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on that day and my wife and I said to each other that we would leave as soon as we heard what we wanted to hear or the meeting starts to get boring. To our surprise we stayed well past the four hours and wished it had gone on longer. We gained so much valuable information from the meeting that we have a new outlook on timeshare ownership. We also met manyother timeshare owners that were interested in options to trading their weeks or points.

“When we attended the meeting we knew that there were other companies besides RCI that were available to use to trade our weeks, but we had no information about their procedures dealing with the exchanges. We learned that some of these companies don't require us to deposit our weeks before they search for an exchange. We also learned that there is no up front fees for some exchanges. We only pay if we get an exchange and some companies have no membership fees to use their services. My wife and I decided that when our contract with RCI expires we will not renew with them and use another company since we no longer care for the service we receive from RCI.

“Another subject covered at the meeting was resale of our timeshares. We attended a couple of meetings by companies that claimed to make offers on our properties only to find out they expected us to not only give them our titles but also pay them thousands of dollars in addition. We learned that there are companies available to list and sell our timeshares that are not scams and we learned how to identify these companies.

“One of the properties we own is the Jockey Club in Las Vegas that is managed by Tricom Realty Services. We have been more than satisfied with this timeshare since we purchased it back in 2001. They have an in house rental program that we have used many times. They had a representative from the company speak at the NTOA meeting and we learned that we can speak with a Platinum Interchange representative at any Tricom property. This makes it so much easier to make an exchange while were there visiting one of their properties. Tricom management is a perfect example of how the industry should be run.

“I could go on and on about the meeting we attended in Kissimmee. It was more than informative. We met many people who give their time and efforts to help people like ourselves to make the most of our timeshare whether it be exchanges, rentals or resales. We also signed up to join the Central Florida owner association and become active in future meetings. I firmly believe that there is strength in numbers. If the NTOA can gain sufficient numbers we can be influential in making positive changes for our membership. I left the meeting wanting more and hopefully in time we can get the word out to other timeshare owners and increase our numbers. I want to personally thank Ed Hastry for all of his hard work to bring this organization this far. I hope to see the ARDA and the NTOA working together to make timeshare ownership what we envisioned when we purchased our first property.”

“I was never interested in a timeshare and certainly was not going to purchase one. You were very gracious in offering my wife and I one of your weeks in Florida. After 3 days I realized how great it was to just walk into the unit with your food, clothes and find it fully furnished with all the amenities. It was just like home and more Then in addition there was an abundance of activities at the resort.
